It was rigid, unreal and strangely abstract as a portrait and yet the emotional dynamic between the characters provided me with a centre (which turned out to be the poodle) from which to work. This piece was the first piece in which I juxtaposed the physicality of the world I create with that of the actor within that world. Richard Burton as he travelled from the east to the west coast of the US in 1860 by stagecoach.
