This work takes the 19th century satirical play “A Live Woman in the Mines” by Alonzo Delano and deconstructs the symbolism of the petticoat, a potent object that shifts in meaning several times during the performance, from under garment to animal skin to flag.
This video incorporates hand drawn images on acetate, live animation, and live action sequences, taking a critical look at how European-American women were represented at the time of the California Gold Rush and how they were integrated both positively and negatively into ideals of community and nationhood.
